Symptoms of tooth infection spreading to the body may include fever, difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling in the face or cheeks, sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures, foul-tasting fluid in your mouth, or a persistent, throbbing toothache with pain spreading to your jawbone, ears, or neck. We understand many of our patients have questions about when to seek emergency dental care. Pain is not the only way to determine how urgently you need to be seen by a dentist. If you’re concerned, we’re concerned. Severe pain, pus or infection, swelling, injury or trauma, and excessive bleeding are all signs you should call us immediately. Many times, headaches and toothaches indicate hidden issues such as TMJ or a dental abscess. Don’t wait for your pain or infection to worsen. Most hospital emergency rooms are not equipped to handle dental emergencies, such as root canals, tooth extractions, or cracked fillings. If your issue is excessive bleeding, they can certainly help triage a wound, but they may not be able to restore a damaged or loose tooth. They may be able to give you something to alleviate your pain temporarily, but you’ll likely still need to visit your dentist for treatment.
